QUEENSLAND - QLD Port Douglas and Cairns Northern Queensland Mother Nature at its richest exists amongst Australia's East Coast starting at the north of Cape York Peninsula where you reach a point that is barely accessible, even by 4WD. This area is filled with Salt Water Crocodiles known locally as 'salites', the ones that will tear your head off in one snap! Not many live hear, only some that have gone 'walkabout in the bush'! The first point of civilization by Australian standards as you head south is Cooktown, a small local town with few travelers. In its waters to the east is a true wonder of the world, stretching more then 2000kms - The Great Barrier Reefs start here. For the diver 'liveaboard's' (where you stay on the boat for a couple of days) can be taken from Port Douglas or an hour south in Cairns. For the nature lover this area is host to a World Heritage Site known as Cape Tribulation where the Daintree Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef - literally - on a long beautiful stretch of beach. Southern Queensland About a ten hour drive or so south from Cairns is Airlie Beach, a popular stop known for it's large man made swimming lagoon and port to the Whitsunday Islands. Sail into the islands on all budgets where you will have the chance to swim, snorkel or scuba dive on the coral reefs for a day trip or longer. Keep going south for another 10hrs or so and you'll hit Hervey Bay, pronounced Harvey Bay for some reason. The town isn't much but there is a reason to go there, Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. SUNSHINE COAST - BRISBANE - GOLD COAST Heading south towards Sydney, that's about it for adventure for sometime, next up is the Sunshine Coast known for its beautiful beaches and Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo. Brisbane, an urban city metropolis on a river is the next city stop. The Gold Coast plays a crucial role in Australian surf life with miles and miles of beach. NEW SOUTH WALES - NSW There are many towns to stop at along the way down from the top of New South Wales to Sydney that cater to both the young and the old and the romantic. Sydney is unlike any other city featuring the Opera House, Darling Harbour, the Rocks, the Botanical Gardens, Taronga Zoo and many surrounding beach areas. About an hour drive is the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley. AUSTRALIA'S CAPITAL TERRITORY - ACT A small state featuring Australia's capital Canberra, being not far from Sydney it is often visited on an overnight trip. The city itself mainly consists of parliament buildings and history of the Australian government. VICTORIA - VIC Another 10 hours or so southwest and you'll hit Melbourne. A cosmopolitan city with a strong sense for fashion sports and culture. Eat dinner on a colonial Tram Cart, go wine tasting in the Yarra Valley, visit the penguins on Phillip Island or drive south along the Shipwreck coast. SOUTH AUSTRALIA - SA Venturing further west about 12 hours along the shipwreck coast you will hit Adelaide. A relatively small city known as the city of churches, it is a port to more wine tasting, river cruising and Kangaroo Island a definite worthwhile stop, featuring many of Australia's local wildlife. WESTERN AUSTRALIA - WA From Adelaide to Perth there isn't much but a vast landscape of miles and miles of desert. Perth is a surprisingly upbeat modern city, it's the only major city on the entire west coast. No matter which way you head you will run into something amazing but completely different. THE NORTHERN TERRITORY - NT THE TOP END Once you hit the Northwestern border of the Northern Territory head north to the Top End. First you hit Katherine Gorge where you can swim or canoe down it's many gorges. As you head towards Darwin you can stop at the Litchfield National Park and Kakadu National Park that is why most head up this way. It features varieties of waterfalls, swim holes, rivers, culture, history, rock formations, aboriginal art, crazy Australian wildlife and many more surprises. THE RED CENTRE Alice Springs and Ayers Rock are often assumed as one in the same when in reality they are pretty far apart and very different. Alice Springs is the town center of the Outback rich with Aboriginal culture and history. Ayers Rock is something completely unique to Australia and holds again a rich culture and history. TASMANIA - TAS A state filled with World Heritage Sites, rugged beauty in its sea cliffs and mountains, wine, food and plenty of adventure, Tasmania is surely worth a visit. Tasmania is an island of diversity usually reached from either Melbourne or Sydney. |
